On 2 December 2025, in Bucharest, the Design and Build Contract was signed for the project: “Metro Extension – Line 4, Gara de Nord – Progresul Station Section,” Lot 1, Section 1 – Gara de Nord – Heroes of the Revolution 2 Station.
The route selected for Lot 1 – Section 1 – Gara de Nord – Heroes of the Revolution 2 has an approximate length (in passenger operation mode) of 6.38 km. The section includes 7 stations, 7 interstation tunnels, and the existing Gara de Nord 2 Station.
The connection to the already constructed Metro Line 4 will be made at Gara de Nord 2 Station, by extending the existing tracks of Lines 1 and 2.
The total project duration (design and construction) is 60 months, including:
- 10 months for design (with 4 months overlapping with construction);
- 50 months for construction;
- 4 months for technological testing and commissioning.
A total of 14 new stations will be constructed between Gara de Nord Station and Progresul Station.
During the event marking the signing of the Notice of Commencement of the construction works on Metro Line M4, the Mayor of Sector 4, Daniel Băluță, who is the Contracting Authority for the project, told journalists: “We have the necessary funds to begin the construction works. I have signed the Notice of commencement. Financing is not an issue. The next step is to appoint a contractor for Lot 2 as well,” Mr. Băluță added.
The Minister of Transport, Ciprian Șerban, stated regarding the M4 project: “Sector 4 City Hall has signed the Notice to launch the largest infrastructure project in the history of the capital — Metro Line M4.”
Daniel Băluță added: “We are introducing real-time metropolitan monitoring. M4 is just the beginning. Our goal is to reduce traffic congestion. In Sector 4, we have already delivered major projects such as the metro, underpasses, and hospitals.”
